By Samantha Garcia Gagnon, Pitt Meadows Doula and Birth Photographer Sneak Peek First - Scroll Down for the FULL Shot. As a doula and birth photographer. I am witness to the most amazing moments.
And then there are these moments. These rare, hardly ever happens moments. I was so excited to be witness to this unique moment, and to get to photograph it too - AMAZING! Babies are typically born with the cephalic vertex anterior (the crown of the head and face down) presentation. Sometimes we also see babies being born "Face Up" also known as posterior - but only about 4-10% of babies are born this way at birth, though many more start this way in labour. And then there are the more unique and rare presentations - including this FULL FACE PRESENTATION that I got to capture. Instead of baby coming out first from the top/crown of their head, the baby is born with the face coming out first. Face presentation occur in 1 of every 600-800 births. I love this image so much that I entered it into the Birth Becomes Her 2017 Moment of Birth Contest. The contest is judged in 4 rounds, but there will be an extra People's Choice voting portion which I will be sure to share when voting starts! I just want to end this saying I am so incredibly proud of my wonderful client. She did such AN AMAZING job and was so strong and focused through it all.

Remarkable. The female body never seems to astound me, and birth is the ultimate expression of it all! WOW!

This picture brings back great memories of my birthing experience. I also gave birth face first last February but unfortunately there were no pictures taken. The nurses insisted, however, that I watch it through a mirror...which I did. Only problem was a lot of bruising afterwards on baby's face!

Sorry in advance..My daughter (1st child) was born sunny side up. I had HORRIBLE back labor. 8 hours of pushing and trying to turn her. Nurse tried to manually reach in and turn her several times. HURT SO BAD! Stretched my skin with fingers which was HORRENDOUS! Dr. Was home watching BIG football game. She was 8#10oz. 20". Had epideral after 6cm. Had to use forceps. LABOR NEVER GOT NORMAL in time. Dr. Was sitting there waiting for the next contraction. During delivery it went back to 10 minutes several times. Did an episiotomy. I still tore. I hemorrhaged immediately. 800CC. Had to stay 5 days in hospital in 1982. She was jaundiced. So she did too. Left with her at 12.9 bilirubin. She wasn't able to leave till below 13. I am 59 now and still have hemorrhoid problems because of it. I was 21yrs old. Should never have delivered naturally!! She had a hard time breathing when born. I was bleeding and noone even noticed because they were with her across room. My husband and I said I wonder if that's normal... Then the Dr. heard the blood hitting the floor and flew over there and started unrolling a ball of gauze into me. I couldn't hold her right after, I was passing out. COULDN'T sleep at all after. Didn't sleep for 72 HOURS! My jaw locked open because of TMJ. I am sorry this isn't good news... but for me... It was HELL. I did however have a 2nd child (son) 3 yrs to the day after. He was 7 hrs delivery and a normal one. Thank God!
